In general, a personal trainer is someone who:

  1. Helps you improve your health and fitness through a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise
  2. Shows you the proper form for each exercise to reduce the chance of injury
  3. Provides motivation to keep your fitness goals even when you don’t want to

A powerlifting coach is someone who:

  1. Helps you safely train for strength in three exercises: bench press, deadlift and squat
  2. Isn’t too concerned with bodyfat but focusses on how to lift the heaviest weights
  3. Is a good choice to prepare you for powerlifting competitions

Both choices are better than sitting on the couch. It depends on your goals as to which one you should choose.
