How I Fixed My Shoulder Pain at Night with 2 Simple Exercises

If you wake up with shoulder pain… or can’t find a comfortable position to fall asleep… I’ve been there.

For years, I struggled with nagging shoulder discomfort at night — the kind that keeps you shifting around trying to find “the right spot.” No position worked. Ice didn’t help. And stretching often made it worse.

Eventually, I stopped looking for relief and started building it — by strengthening the muscles that were letting my shoulder collapse at night.

The Two Key Movements That Helped Me Sleep Pain-Free

These exercises helped me create stability in the back of the shoulder — exactly what’s missing when you’re lying on your side or have weak posture habits.

🔹 1. Side-Lying External Shoulder Rotation

This targets the rotator cuff, especially the infraspinatus and teres minor, which help keep your shoulder in its socket. When these are weak, sleeping on your side can compress your shoulder and cause aching or numbness.

🔹 2. Side-Lying Reverse Fly

This movement strengthens the mid-back and rear shoulder. It improves posture and shoulder blade control — two essential things for reducing nighttime pain caused by poor positioning.

Both of these can be done in bed or on a mat. I do 6 sets per arm (3 of each exercise) — each sets lasts 1 minute. It may sound long, but I walk you through every second in my video.
